Babywearing Sale-Swap List Are you into babywearing and addicted to carriers and slings? Here's the place to sell, buy and swap your sling and carriers. This list is limited to babywearing items only.
Slings: Slings allow you to hold your baby horizontally or upright. Made of soft fabric with an adjustable strap, slings drape your baby across your body (see picture). The most famous sling, made with input from Dr. Sears (the father of "baby wearing'), is made by NoJo, (pictured), but many other manufacturers have jumped into the sling market. Whichever brand you choose, devoted sling user Darien Wilson from Austin, Texas has a great tip for new moms: "The trick for avoiding backache when using a sling is to have the bulk of the baby's weight at the parent's waist or above." Weight limit: 20 pounds. (Note: weight limits may vary by manufacturer. This is only an approximate weight limit. Please check the directions for each item you purchase.)
Recommendations: While NoJo was the first, we don't really think they're the best slings out there. Readers complain that they hang too low and hurt their backs. Instead, our readers recommend the Maya Wrap Sling ($35, www.mayawrap.com) citing its flexibility and comfort. Others praise the Over the Shoulder Baby Holder ($30 to $40, web: www.otsbh.net). If you're looking for unusual fabrics so you can be a "stylish" baby wearer, go no further than the ZoLo sling (www.zolowear.com). The silk version (it's machine washable) will set you back a hefty $150 but wow, is it beautiful! And they'll send you fabric swatches if you have trouble deciding from one of their 13 fabrics. Finally, we liked the Sling Baby from Walking Rock Farm (www.walkingrockfarm.com) the well padded strap plus soft knit fabrics make this a great option for $59 to $67.
Where to buy: Kangaroo Korner (www.kangarookorner.com) is a web site recommended by readers for their selection. They carry several brands and will even custom design a sling for you. Best of all, they offer tips and advice for using a sling.
